Take a break

July 20, 2026

The hats never come off

Most people I see are wearing at least three or four hats before 9am. Parent, partner, employee or business owner, caregiver to their own parents. Somewhere in there, they're also supposed to be a person with a life.

Nobody hands you a break. You have to decide to take one, and most of us are terrible at deciding that. We wait until we're wrung out, until the body forces the issue with a bad back or a headache that won't quit, and then we call it "self-care" like it's a splurge we finally earned.

It's not a splurge. It's maintenance. You wouldn't wait for your car to break down on the highway to change the oil.

Why rest feels so hard to justify

If you're used to being the one who handles things, sitting still can feel almost wrong. There's always something that needs your attention — a deadline, a kid, a parent, a client. The list doesn't end, so if you're waiting for it to end before you rest, you'll be waiting a long time.

This is the trap: we treat rest as the thing that happens after everything else is handled. But everything else is never fully handled. That's not a personal failing, that's just what having a full life looks like.

The shift that actually helps is small but real — stop asking "do I have time for this" and start asking "can I afford not to." Tension you're carrying in your shoulders, your jaw, your lower back doesn't go away because you're busy. It just waits, quietly, and gets more expensive to unwind the longer you ignore it.

What a break is actually for

A good break isn't about escaping your life. It's about remembering what you're doing it all for. Why you get up, why you keep taking the next step, who and what you're actually working toward.

That's hard to access when your body is braced and your mind is three tabs ahead of where you're sitting. Massage works because it interrupts that. Someone else is paying attention to you for once — to where you're holding tension, where you've been overworking without noticing, where you need to just be taken care of for a little while.

You spend so much of your time taking care of everyone else's needs. This is one of the few spaces built entirely around yours.

Making rest something you return to, not something you earn

A few things that help people actually build breaks into their life instead of just talking about needing one:

None of this fixes what's waiting for you on the other side of the appointment. The emails will still be there. But you'll meet them with a body that isn't braced for impact, and that difference is bigger than it sounds.

You give so much of yourself away, day after day, to people and things that need you. Every so often, it's worth giving some of that back to yourself — and there's a chair here with your name on it whenever you're ready to sit down and let someone else take care of you for a while.
